why we sing...some penny thoughts

So I watched 2 artists perform the other day.  Both youngish attractive-ish men, both singer song-writers.  It was a big and chaotic room, lots of noise and different reasons for people to be there apart from the music. They had different responses from the audience but were both equally talented.  One was able to capture and the other felt somehow as if he was in competition with the people in the room.
As a drama teacher I have spoken to students about the truth that is if you allow people to see 'you' in a moment then it will be captivating. Not you thinking about whether mum's looking or whether you've chosen the right side of your face to feature while you sing a note but you doing nothing to inhibit the natural flow of whatever energy you are giving space to in that moment.
